(March 2008): I took part in the Shipping Law programme at UCT in 1999/2000. During my articles in Hamburg, Germany, I worked for the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. After the second exam I worked for five years for a law firm in Hamburg well-established in transport and forwarding law. In March 2008 I joined the law firm Dabelstein & Passehl in Hamburg, Germany, specialising in transport and shipping law.

(July 24 1998): I am currently working for the Industrial Development Corporation, in Sandton, Johannesburg, as an Advisor in the International Finance Division. The crux of the work involves Import Finance, Export Finance and Project Finance. We arrange medium-term facilities for industrialists to finance the purchase of capital goods and services from overseas. We have credit line facilities available for this purpose from banks throughout the world and are therefore able to offer buyer credits to foreign buyers, which helps the SA manufacturers when tendering for foreign contracts.

(Updated 25 January 2001) — After working in London for a few years I am currently working in the shipping department of Al Tamimi & Co, the largest local non-affiliated law firm in the United Arab Emirates.  I am based in Dubai and find this a fascinating experience.
(Updated November 2003) Went to San Francisco to attend the IBA 2003 recently. I was also a speaker on one of the Maritime Sub-Committees, headed by Vincent Prager of Stikeman Elliott LLP in Montreal. I'm sure you know him. The topic was "port services and labour strikes", and it was a good experience. Then I saw a friend of mine in NY before heading to London for 3 days. Just the thought of travelling makes me smile already.
I has a really good trip to Australia earlier. Also went skydiving in Buron Bay. My instructor was called "Attila", from Hungary. Very comforting hey? Just seeing the small planes made me want to fly all over again. I made it to De Rebus in September [Website note: unfortunately the issue concerned seems to have been removed from the De Rebus website...!]
In Dubai its same as always, i.e. having loads of fun and enjoying my work. But still miss you guys, please say hello to all for me. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms in the desert, would love to hear from former classmates.

(Updated  Nov 19, 2002) After working for two years at a law firm in Sao Paulo, Brazil, I returned to South Africa, and entered into an agreement with a Brazilian legal and business consultancy company (South Partner), situ Brazil and South Africa are actively promoting trade between the two countries, and opportunities abound in various fields of trade. I am in the process of setting up my own practice in South Africa which will focus on providing legal advice in Portuguese to Brazilians (and nationals from other Portuguese-speaking countries) in South Africa.
PROF'S NOTE: Had a welcome visit from Emile at the Unit early in Nov 2002. He has had a fascinating stay in Brazil and is fluent in Brazilian Portuguese and, he stresses, more importantly in the "Brazilian way of doing business". Do his classmates recall the Flying Dutchman FMR programme he put on for the class the night before their exams?

Marine and Shipping Law

(updated 12 Nov 2003)  My family is fine. Our second born is a boy — now six months old — called Zion. The first born is a girl {5 years now} called Moriah. We have an adopted son, Patrick, (7 years).
As a partner in the law firm of Ogola & Ochwa in Mombasa, I was one of 10 members of a task force set up to review the maritime laws of Kenya.
The Task Force has also concluded work with the following bills and documents ready:
- Marine Pollution Bill.
- Inlands Waters Transport Bill.
- Ferries Incorporation Authority Bill.
- Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill.
- Maritime Authority Bill.
- Admiralty Jurisdiction Bill.
- Merchant Shipping Bill.
We have also prepared and submitted a maritime policy document and a host of other recommendations including suggested amendments to the Marine Insurance Act and the Kenya Ports Authority Act. We could not exhaustively conclude our mandate due to limited time. This was worsened by the change of government and our programme from January to May, 2003 (when we retired) was very hectic but with little government interest. That accounts for our failure to get in touch with The UCT Shipping Law Unit as we had previously arranged. The new government is just settling down. We will present our report and move on from there. Our task force was very appreciative of the support we received from John Hare through positive encouragement and through his written work and a number of them hope to meet him one day.
Since I left Cape Town it was my desire to have our maritime laws reviewed, and I played a major role in convincing the authority to set up the Task Force. The trouble is that at the end of the day most members are not maritime practitioners and their interests are no permanent than a passing cloud. The greatest hurdle will be to convince parliament to pass the bills.
I really wish to be more involved in maritime affairs than I am currently, and I would request introductions to regional interest groups in this field.
I would love to hear from other former students.

Shipping Law

(at 5/07/2006) After graduating from UCT in 2000 I practised as a shipping lawyer in Antwerp (Coudert Brothers LLP), focusing mainly on cargo litigation before the Belgian courts. In 2004 I joined the corporate/arbitration department of Leboeuf Lamb Greene & Macrae LLP (Brussels) where I was engaged mostly in oil and gas arbitration in the Central Asian Republics. Since November 2005 I have been working for a Belgian shipping/logistics group (Ahlers LMS) in Chennai, India. My work consists mainly of evaluating the local business processes and giving commercial impetus to the local branches.
I still have vivid memories of Cape Town: the fun times with classmates, adventure and havoc on the Orange River, walks on the mountain slopes, and more. Classmates, I hope you are doing well and I hope to hear from you.

(23 March 2006) My attendance at the Cape Town 2006 CMI Colloquium, when I had a chance to catch up with may SA shipping lawyers, now gives me the opportunity to update my details here.
I did my Masters degree at UCT back in 1995. Needless to say I had a splendid year, coming from the pale Belgian winter to the gorgeous Cape summer. The course was great too!. The subject of my dissertation was Arrest of Ships: a comparative analysis of Belgian and South African law. Since my stay in Cape Town I have tried to keep close links with South African shipping law by becoming an overseas member of the South African maritime Law Association. I am practising as an attorney with Marcon & Rubens in Antwerp. We specialise in Shipping and Transport Law at large. Info and contact details can be found on www.marcon-rubens.com. Don't hesitate to contact me should you ever travel to Belgium.

I left the Navy in June 2006 and I am apparently now a Commander (retired) -- at the age of 34! I then did the 6-months full-time course at the School for Legal Practice at UCT. After a couple of interviews and horrible offers (how does one survive on R3500 a month?), I started with my articles at MacGregor Stanford Kruger Inc in Cape Town in January 2007.  You may know David MacGregor, one of the directors of the firm. He was formerly at Fairbridges.  The only maritime matter I have dealt with so far (March 2007) was to arrest a yacht in Mossel Bay in January.  I must say that I have never learned so much in such a short period as in these three months (neither have I walked so much!).
Like you, I also have some writing and editing waiting for me.  I am determined to finish my dissertation this year.
