Marine and Shipping Law

(16 September 2004) Having studied Marine and Shipping Law at UCT, I am now employed by the new European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). It is a specialised body of the EU, established by common decision of the Council and the Parliamant of the EU (Regulation EC No 1406/2002), to fulfill maritime tasks of the EU Commission and to assist the (new) EU Member States to fulfill the "aquis communitaire" in the maritime safety sector.
The establishment of this agency and the creation of its inspection and mission powers is a result of the public awareness iro the oil spills caused by the sinking of ERIKA and PRESTIGE — one task of the agency now being a centralised, databank supported "black listing" of certain substandard vessels under the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control.
I will deal with marine pollution liability and response regimes, maritime casualty investigation regimes and maritime security regimes. As the agency took its preliminary seat in Brussels I am moving to this city. Is Derry still based at the University of Brussels?
My knowledge gained at UCT helped me a lot when the EU selection committee checked out for 60 minutes whether my knowledge in marine affairs and maritime law is really profound. Particularly my description of the IKAN TANDA casualty and its legal frame was very useful.

As of July 2002 I am currently Company Secretary/Legal Adviser with Officetron Company Limited, based in Lagos, Nigeria where we carry out Information Technology related business. Our website at http://www.officetron.com gives more information. With the advent of democracy in Nigeria there is a lot of excitement over the prospects of developing the country after years of misrule. The economy is gradually being deregulated and privatisation of government owned parastatal is presently underway. My firm is actively involved in a lot of work in the oil and gas, telecommunications.  I enjoy travelling, reading, movies and music.

On 22 August 2003 Shade's wife gave birth to a baby boy. He writes: "I am very proud of my wife who has been a wonderful wife and I am sure will be a wonderful mother. The baby's name is ADEDAMOLA ADEBIYI OLUWATOBI AKAPO. My wife and I call him Adedamola. In my language (Yoruba) it means wealth has mixed with royalty."

(July 2007) After working as an attorney for Intermarine in New Orleans (1994-2000), I have been Chief Legal Counsel of BBC Chartering & Logistic, a project carrier with the head office in Leer, Germany. BBC operates about 130 vessels, mostly project cargo consisting of windmills, generators, heavy lift cargoes and pipes. We have office in Houston, Singapore, Dubai, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo. The company is 10 years old in 2007 and we are extremely proud of the fact that we are now the world's largest project carrier.
Additionally, I have been teaching courses in charterparties and ship-broking at Tulane Law School as an adjunct since 1995. I received a PhD (Law) from the University of Groningen in 2006. My dissertation is titled "Shipbrokers as Agents, Intermediaries and Third Parties."

(August 2007) Following six years at Holman Fenwick & Willan (where I qualified as a solicitor), in May 2006 I moved out of private practice and took an in-house position with BNP Paribus (Suisse) SA, Geneva, as legal counsel to their Ship Finance team. My wife Cassandre (who you might have met, I'm not sure) works for De Beers in London but is with me while she is on maternity leave following the birth of our little boy, Sebastien Felix, in April 2007. Geneva is a welcome change from London and a great place to have young children.

Shipping Law

(April 2001) After returning to Germany from Cape Town in December 2000, I had to get adjusted to the miserable weather in Germany. Currently I am doing my articles with the public prosecutor's office in Hamburg. I enjoyed South Africa a lot. Thanks to everybody who made my year there a very special time for me!
(November 2003) Family life and my new job are keeping me busy. I am finally done with my articles and the exams and started working as a shipping attorney with Ahlers & Vogel at their office in Hamburg this month.  I did part of my articles with this firm last year, so I already knew what I had to expect.
In spring, I worked for a ship owning/managing company in Hamburg to learn some of the practical aspects of shipping. That, too, was very fascinating. I got to see some parts of ships that I didn't even know existed. That time was quite tough, as I had to prepare my oral exam at the beginning of May.
I was fortunate enough not only to get a job right after the exam but to be able to choose when to begin!

You can imagine, there is not much call for maritime lawyers in land-locked Calgary!
