Annual Cadwallader Memorial Lecture in London,
15 September 2003.
By kind invitation of Dr Aleka Mandaraka-Sheppard the founder and director of the London Shipping Law Centre of University College, London, an invited audience of over 80 South Africans were able to participate in last night's Cadwallader Memorial Lecture (see our slide presentation here).
The speakers' papers have been put onto the London Shipping Law Centre's website. The evening was a great success from this side of the Atlantic, and hopefully also for our friends and colleagues up north.
The link was made into the Faculty's Oliver Tambo Moot Court and the costs of the connections, of the hiring of equipment in London to be set up in the Captain's Room at Lloyds, and of a reception at the Shipping Law Unit were met by sponsors Smit Marine, Shepstone & Wylie, Marine Crew Servics and Telepassport.
The lectures are held annually in London to commemorate the memory of Prof FJJ 'Cad' Cadwallader, who taught shipping law at UCL and at Cardiff until his untimely death in 1991. Prof John Hare was his first South African graduate — which made this link to Dr Sheppard (also a Cad graduate) and to UCL all the more meaningful.
Our thanks to UCL and to our sponsors — and to all those from the SA Navy, SAMSA, the merchant navy academy and training institutions, the industry and the maritime law practices for taking the trouble to join our 2003 LLM class.
