Professor John Hare, who ended two decades of full-time practice as an attorney in 1993 to head the Shipping Law Unit at the School for Advanced Legal Studies, teaches Insurance Law to LLB students as well as a range of LLM courses in Shipping and Maritime Law. While he comes in for unstinting praise by LLB students, it is the accolades from Shipping Law students that mark John Hare as a teacher of rare exception.
The
Dean of Law, Professor Hugh Corder (right) congratulates Professor Hare on
receiving a Distinguished Teacher Award in December 2000.
His teaching is characterized by an extraordinary devotion to students, boundless enthusiasm, and an unsurpassed knowledge of his field. Students praise him for his amiable, caring manner, the clarity of his lectures and the clinical efficiency with which his courses are organized. A comprehensive theoretical knowledge of his field together with extensive pracdtical experience as an attorney allows John Hare to marry theory and practice in ways that students not only find stimulating but that have an enduring impact on their professional lives. Whether it is a visit to the Port Captain's Office, cargo loading facilities, various shipwrecks along the coast or a salvage operation, a field trip with John Hare is a vibrant and exciting experienc.
His commitment to fostering a congenial learning experience for students is perhaps best demonstrated by the initiative he took to raise finance to establish a postgraduate research unit with its own seminar room and resource cente to give shipping law students an academic home. What is more, John Hare's status as a leading authority in his specialization is confirmed by the recent publication of his 1,100 page textbook, Shipping Law and Admiralty Jurisdiction in South Africa.
The following tribute from a Master's student is a measure of the impact John Hare's teaching has on students and the high esteem in which he is held: I wish to express my gratitude to Professor Hare, my masterful teacher, supervisor and role model who helped realize my dream of becoming a successful maritime [law] practitioner.
