Useful general reference

  • Jutastat provides an electronic legal database of SA law. They have full-text statutes and law reports available on CD-ROM, but much of the material is on their Really Useful website. It is interactive so that you can do searches for shipping materials. The Case Digest with summaries of all cases submitted for consideration for inclusion in the law reports is particularly useful.
  • Butterworths LexisNexis Direct - fulltext on-line access to: all SA Law Reports; Butterworths Constitutional Law Reports; SA Statutes; Provincial statutes; LAWSA; Current Law; Gracies index and noter-uup to SA case law. (Best accessed using Internet Explorer.)

  • EISIL is a portal to information and resources on the following topics:
    General International Law; States & Groups of States; International Organizations, Individuals and Groups; International Air, Space & Water; International Environmental Law; International Economic Law; International Human Rights; International Criminal Law; Communications & Transport; Use of Force; International Dispute Settlement; Private International Law (all in PDF format).   • The Alliance of Maritime Regional Interests in Europe (AMRIE) was founded in 1993 as an initiative of members of the European Parliament to provide all maritime regional interests with a co-ordinated and effective political voice to achieve an "Integrated Maritime Strategy".

  • Maritime Law and Law of the Sea resources page, belonging to the digital platform built by the Law department of ESTIG/Beja Polytechnic.

  • The Admiralty and Maritime Law Guide includes over 1,500 annotated links to admiralty law resources on the Internet and a growing database of admiralty case digests and opinions, arbitration award abstracts and international maritime conventions.
  • Maritime Global Net - the international maritime industry web portal. Hot port news; tanker index; bunker prices; events; press releases; and business card listings.
  • http://www.soton.ac.uk/~iml/New%20site/Framelink.htm - plenty of useful links, making this site an up-to-date and useful resource to the worldwide maritime community.
  • MegaLaw.com - a website delivering everything a lawyer needs from the Internet in one place, including over 10 000 legal links, free legal research, over 100 legal topic pages from Administrative Law to Zoning Law, and many other free legal tools.
  • Lloyds Open Form, its history and text, and the complete text of SCOPIC and its tariffs and guarantees are provided on the Lloyd's Agency site.
  • Electronic Document Interchange - the new technology set to replace the forest of paper associated with shipping transactions; especially the Bill of Lading which the shipowner gtives to the cargo-owner when he carries cargo.

  • The Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa site, hosted by the Law Faculty at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, provides (among other things) the full texts of recent Judgments, in chronological order.

  • Professor Bill Tetley's Site is now on McGill University's server. His website on maritime law and other personal enthusiasms is well organised and has been brushed up recently. The glossaries are particularly recommended.
  • Shiplaw: --a dramatic display and wide collection of links and resources relating to admiralty and maritime law. Published by Philip E. Weiss, Esq., of the Kaye, Rose and Partners law firm in San Diego, California. (per kind favour of Prof John Paul Jones, School of Law, University of Richmond, Richmond VA 23173.)

  • Guide to WTO - The Final Act of the Uruguay Round
    The Final Act Embodying the Results of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations", signed by ministers in Marrakesh on 15 April 1994 is 550 pages long and contains legal texts which spell out the results of the negotiations since the Round was launched in Punta del Este, Uruguay, in September 1986. In addition to the texts of the agreements, the Final Act also contains texts of Ministerial Decisions and Declarations which further clarify certain provisions of some of the agreements.
  • WTO Agreements: Implications and Imbalances -- This paper, by the former Director of UNCTAD's Trade Programmes, provides a critique of some of the imbalances existing in the Uruguay Round agreements, for the South countries. He argues that since these agreements were targeted to obtain commitments and concessions from the South, severe imbalances with adverse effects have resulted for the South. Thus, the South should aim to correct these imbalances and allow the WTO system to work for them.
